ZFP-like compression of halo regions

It seems as though compressing (and subsequent decompressing) of the halo regions sent over MPI might better performance. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's ZFP seems like a good candidate.

Question: How much compression can zfp-like compressors achieve? (and at what error rate, or lossy-ness?). I think this is actually a tunable parameter in zfp.
